What methods do private investigators use to investigate someone in real life?

One of the most mind boggling which he often shared with many people but withheld names due to HIPPA and Privacy Act. I will call the late PI - Joe, The Insurance Company ACME, and the “suspicious” person - Susan. DUE TO PRIVACY AND HIPPA LAWS.
While the food she made was very simple. It was very difficult for her to do simple things as stated, her home was not designed for a wheel-chair person at all. Then she had to go to the bathroom. Joe decided to state “Ma’am, how are you getting in and out of the toilet.” Susan then said “It’s a problem!” Once she wheel-chaired (her temporary replacement), she had to unfold two walkers, having to pull herself up to the toilet, and then struggle to get her pants down so she could go.
Susan was struggling! She was not, whatsoever, financially “well off”. She lost both of her employment, with one “closed for good” - which her benefits were dried up, the other employment relocated, due to the accident, with her being hospitalized, she couldn’t sell the home and relocate, instead they paid her a ‘severance’ compensation.
Joe decided to go ahead and make her plate that she was cooking and set it down at the table, once Susan was out of the bathroom, Joe noticed, she was very strained. It was very stressful for her living by herself. He then asked “What would you like to drink?” She then blurted out “Screw the doctors, gimme my beer!”
Then she got the 2nd employer’s letter, and tossed that to Joe. It was a letter that the Company was down-sizing and they were relocating to this State, all employees who wished to be relocated to alert xxx at (xxx) xxx-xxxx ext xxxx by xx/xx/xxxx. She wasn’t aware that they had mailed it to her, because she wound up back in the hospital and then rehab for almost 6 months.
Then Susan began to cry and said “I haven’t put any holiday decorations in years since the kids went to college.” Then suddenly she snapped out of it, and immediately asked “How much are they asking for this house?”
What did your sister do to you that you can never forget?
The Realtor was already inside, but Joe told her to remain there, he wanted Susan to experience this upfront. Once at the door, Joe told her “see that button?” She did and pushed it. It opened the front door. Joe then told her “This place has a back up generator, so if in the event of power failure, she would still be able to access it.” Joe then told her, to back up back to the front porch. Joe then told her how she can open the door manually without power assistance, she was surprised that it opened up with ease and grace.
He then had brochures (that were for disabled veterans), he was using the illustrations (photographs). It was then when Joe learned that Susan served, she was honorably discharged, from Air Force. Susan then told him that was where she met her late husband, after they found out he was diagnosed -end stage kidney disease, it was already too late. He was discharged honorably. Then she requested to be discharged after 11 years of service. Before he died, he brought this house, the kids were all teenagers, then he died. She didn’t know what to do, except got this job worked full time, and bills were mounting up and she had to get a 2nd job. When they graduated and went off to College, she paid for it all.
ACME fired him and they hired someone else! But even with their 2nd PI (which knew who Joe was) turned around and reported Susan was 100% genuine paraplegic.

Since Susan had no family members, Joe voluntarily elected to stay with her. She didn’t want to go to the hospital, she really didn’t need any medical treatment, except for 2 band aids on a small cut. Because the “accident now turned criminal”, it was already photographed of her in distress (Joe had the video, Joe also had the photographs).
From there, Joe opened the garage entry/exit door. A ramp takes her down to the garage, which was very roomy. The Realtor then said “You have an attic. However, in order for you to use it. You would need the vehicle out on the driveway and the garage door closed.” The Realtor showed that the garage door was remote controlled. She opened it, then closed it. Then stated this is both manual or electric. You need to be right here, and hands her the remote. Joe tells Susan, push the button.
Susan was a bit bewildered, and turned and asked Joe “What exactly do people use attics for?” Joe told her “Well, people keep their holiday stuff in the attic. I know I do, the Christmas Tree, Christmas Decor, Halloween, Easter, and stuff like that.” Susan scoffed, and said “Fake tree?! Bleh!” Joe then chimed in “Fake, Artificial, yeah some of them are, some can look very real. In fact, you might find the Artificial tree to your favor because you won’t have to sweep or vacuum needles constantly or worry about a fire hazard.”

She zoomed around and asked “How do I get into the garage?” Joe then opened the door, which led to a pantry room, front loading washer and dryer. Then the side door, that is another entry and exit from the house. Which Susan zoomed around in full circle. She enjoyed it a lot that the gate itself was at her level. As she was able to open it and the sidewalk led to the driveway. Susan then turned around and entered back into the house.
Realtor showed her, she gasped at the price! And said “Thank you, but it’s way out of my league!” Joe thanked the Realtor for her time and said “Susan, you have a home paid for, we can sell that one and you can negotiate a price, it’s what they’re asking for.” Then she returned back home. She then said “I want out! She didn’t want to stay in the house anymore.” Joe stated he would have the Realtor to come over and go over with some stuff.

She did, and slowly the attic began to lower itself. Realtor added on, you can go on the platform to remove or add anything you wish. It has a 2,000 pound weight limit. The red mark you see, is the maximum level. You cannot store anything higher than that red mark or you will damage the roof above you.
Somehow, her left leg was literally entangled. He had to call 911 and get a Police officer out right away to help her get undone, but the Officer couldn’t (due to back injury), instead the Paramedics came and assisted her. They also managed to get her wheelchair off the ramp, while the Officer was trying to get the ramp up and closed. It turned out it had a short.
Susan is a motor vehicle accident survivor. It was the Company truck driver that caused the accident. Susan hired a lawyer, and she won the lawsuit, which cost the Insurance a fortune, plus they were responsible (per the Jury’s orders) to pay all medical bills, expenses, and upcoming surgery(ies) as disclosed by the Surgeons and Medical Experts.
She went into details and in depth (Joe recorded it without her knowing), about how she finally came to at the hospital, she was knocked unconscious and only remembered seeing the truck plow into her car - BAM - and next thing she knew, she was in the hospital waking up. She tried to move and was unable to do so, when the Nurse came in, she was told she was paralyzed from waist down.
Joe was slightly amused, but somewhat concerned for Susan. WHY? Susan lived alone, all her children had nothing to do with their mom due to the fact she married their dad and he became very ill, and lost the battle with kidney failure, passed away, she never remarried, and she worked two full time jobs to support the family and including her 3 kids to college and paid their college as well.
Susan had to revert to her old wheelchair, because her brand new one got completely wet and ran into mechanical issues. Joe stayed with her, making observations inside. She phoned her Surgeon’s office and told them what happened, since he had placed a small hidden microphone on her receiver. The Surgeon’s nurse was furious, and Susan did give them the case number and did report that they were finally arrested and went to jail. The Nurse assured her she was phoning the State Attorney’s Office right away to see that those 2 (*censored words*) would be prosecuted to the maximum the law allowed.

The Realtor said “That’s the manual mode, this here is the electrical mode” - which she pushed the button and it put the top shelf back up and the lower end back to the position. The Realtor then added, the 2nd bedroom which can also be an office or guest room also has this function. The Master Bedroom closet is fully wheelchair accessible. Susan then followed the Realtor to the Master Bedroom which also has a Master bathroom and a Master closet. The Bed was included with the house, which is a Queen sized motorized bed. Realtor also stated, the Wall Mount Television is also included.
Then the Surgeon’s office called, they believe they can try to repair the damaged nerves so she could at least regain some mobility in her legs which would enable her to stand. Joe then stated, there’s a house that’s designed for wheelchair / disability friendly, that he would like to take her down to see it. Joe then stated, he would be more than happy to make arrangements. He added “I think it would be a smart move to move into another place, brand new lease on life.”

Joe would often state, he had numerous photographs, numerous videos, that Susan, was indeed paralyzed waist down. Susan purchased a specialty van that has a built in chair lift ramp. Susan also upgraded her wheelchair as well. Susan also had a private trainer that taught her how to drive the specialty van. She did crash a couple of times during training. She ran over her mailbox, crashed into her neighbor’s garbage cans, ran over her flower bed.
Susan then stated that her lawyer was furious that the ACME insurance was trying to settle for cheap, he told Susan that they were going to go through a trial, so the Jury can order the settlement. Susan then was telling Joe, that she closed off her savings account, and closed a couple of CD’s so she could pay the mortgage off in full.
Then they went to the second bedroom, Susan was delighted, then they headed to the dining room, and the kitchen. Susan blurted out “It’s perfect!”, then she zoomed out to the sliding glass doors. The Realtor then said “These doors can be electrically opened with a push of button right here and the other side is right there, or you can manually slide them open.” Then she went to the back porch. It was perfect! The Realtor then added if you notice right here, walking over. She can plant whatever she liked, adding there’s no grass back here except plants. The waterfall is included. The Kois that lived in the pond has been removed by the owner. She can purchase her own Koi. The manual to take care of this is included with the purchase of the property.

Joe’s response did not please them whatsoever. Joe reported “She’s genuine.” He stated “all evidence” video and audio and photographs taken were 100% proof. He chided them for “wasting” his time and valuable resources on a motor vehicle accident victim.
She then had surgery, the first of the 4 or maybe 5. This surgery was imperative, since the surgery done at the hospital was a “repair to heal” surgery only.
Joe realized the time was flying by, it was now almost 8 PM. Joe then told Susan, “I would like to stop by here tomorrow in the morning if I may. I have something to share with you.” Susan was so embarrassed, and gave Joe a big apology “for talking his ears off.”
Is crossdressing being a transvestite?
He also then told her about Service Dogs. What all they can do for her.
She tossed him the papers, and over and over, the appeal was “denied”. She went on to state that old electric wheelchair (motorized) belonged to her former backyard neighbor, their family member passed away and offered it to her for $50.00 cash, and they would bring it over with the two batteries which they didn’t know if it were any good or not. Susan told Joe that the batteries would only last for about an hour and then would die. She then phoned around and asked for wheel chair referrals, and she didn’t realize she could have called her Surgeon’s Office.
Joe noticed the neighbors glanced over, laughed (he recorded them), totally disregarding her pleas for help! Then the storm brewed up, and it was lightning badly. Susan tried to get herself out of the wheelchair, and literally fell, with half of her body dangling from the lift and chair, she was stuck! Joe knew he had to act fast, because the lightning was dangerously close, he left his post and immediately ran to rescue her.

Then resumed back to those terrible mail that her kids sent her. Wanting nothing to do with Mom anymore. Susan began to cry again, repeatedly stating “What did I do wrong?”
Susan glanced at the property, and one of the first things she said was “Ohhhh, a garage!” (Her property did not have a garage or a carport, it was driveway parking only.) The house was elevated, so therefore there were ramps. Joe spoke that the more Susan looked around, she was wide-eyed like a child with a dime in a candy store!
Joe didn’t stop there, he went on to assist Susan, and the VA finally assisted Susan as they were supposed to have been, plus the missing benefits she was entitled to were awarded to her. She was able to sell the house and made a nice profit. Joe assisted her with the VA loan, she had to have a small mortgage. She was able to get that property. In addition, a brand new vehicle (for transportation) was also purchased (which added to the mortgage).

The Realtor summoned her up to the bed, right there beside it, she pushed the button and the bed lowered itself, then added “this bed is fully adjustable. You can raise or lower, whatever level you like, including the back and front.”
The Realtor, then had her back in the wheelchair, to show how the shower worked. With a turn of the dial, she could use the hand-held, or the shower itself. She also showed the buttons, that the tub will fill up, she could have a Jacuzzi, a tub bath, or soak. Then Susan went and opened the hallway closet, it was all within her reach, then the Realtor said to get the top shelf, you can pull on this rope here. She pulled on the rope, and the bottom shelf moved to the back and the top shelf lowered.
Once she did that, bills began to mount up, her 1st long time employer, then gave her a letter, she tossed it in front of Joe. It was a letter stating they were closing for good, and the check she was getting was a severance, and the 401k would be provided by the Financial Institution it was located at, it was up to her if she wanted to cash it out or continue paying $xx.xx a month. Susan then said, she needed a motorized wheelchair, her Insurance Company was already maxed out, she had no more benefits, however, the guy’s insurance, ACME, would only approve for a “non-motorized” wheelchair.
Joe knew within a few months that Susan was not “faking” and she was indeed paralyzed from waist down. Until one day, she was returning from her Surgeon’s appointment, and for some reason, the wheelchair lift failed, and she was stuck half-way. She remained there for almost 2 hours and no one would help her!
Susan then stated, she could move her arms, she could turn, but she now had to pull herself around. She called for a lawyer, and the lawyer wanted her to meet in the Office, but she told them “She can’t move, she’s in the hospital”, then the Lawyer met up with her in the Hospital. She did not really care for his secretary, she had a bad attitude and she let him know about it.
Joe proceeded to wash her dishes and put them on the counter. Then he wondered, and couldn’t help but ask “How do you reach the upper shelves in the cabinet.” Susan responded bluntly “I don’t! They’re stuck up there.”
Is it wise to choose your family over your honor?
Once inside of the house, she roamed around. With the Realtor and Joe following her. One of the first things she hit was the bathroom! Joe encouraged her to go ahead and try. She was able to get in and out of the toilet without struggling! She was a bit confused about the strange looking shower - bathtub. The Realtor then introduced herself, and verbally told her how to use the shower-bathtub. Susan then proceeded as a “pretend”, and struggled for a bit. Joe then said “You will learn to adapt to it, no one gets it right the first few times. It does take practice.”
The claim was “Susan was ‘faking’ being paraplegic”. They HIRED Joe to prove she was faking it!
ACME called and hired Joe and provided him paperwork on Susan. They strongly believed Susan “faked” the injuries.
In the beginning, it was pretty good, but it took its toll on him though. Because people are different, some are night owls, some are middle of day people, others are early morning.
Susan became curious. Joe went on to add that the doors are wider to allow wheelchairs to get in and out, the bathroom and kitchen and all are all designed for wheelchair accessibility. She will be able to access and use the cabinets fully. Susan agreed, she would take a look at it. Joe then phoned the Realtor (who is also a neighbor of his). Joe also acquired a wheelchair transport (private company), which they took both of them to the property.
These Insurance Companies would hire PI’s for various reasons: Possible insurance fraud, possible fraudulent claims, etc.
Joe assured her, she didn’t do anything wrong, he was angry because there were assistance she qualified from the VA, and from that standpoint, he then made a mental note to contact the VA Administration. There was no excuse for their slackness. He went on to show her the images, how a wheelchair accessibility can make her life more profitable.
Then ACME contacted Joe, they demanded an answer, the proof she was faking and a “fraud”.
When the Technician came to take a look at her expensive brand new wheelchair, he had to take that one back to the shop and came out with a “temporary” replacement until the one she had was repaired.
In addition, Joe surprised Susan, he secretly phoned her Surgeon and told him “Do not let Susan know yet”, she was awarded a Shepherd / Lab mix service dog, after several weeks of training. Susan, and her dog, Misty, were inseparable.
While she ate, Joe had an Uncle who was paralyzed, a veteran, and his Uncle’s home is designed for wheelchair bound people. He then struck up a conversation with Susan. This was how he learned she had 3 children, and they wanted nothing to do with their mom. Per her remarks, “Mom was never home!” Joe admitted he was angered by this, after when Susan handed him letter written by her daughter, a short card that had “GET LOST!” from her oldest son, and her youngest son wrote a nasty postcard, she took their threats seriously (!) when they threatened to “impose a restraining order”. So she never spoke with them.
Susan began to cry, Joe had no idea why. Joe stated he tried to console her, and she kept saying “I cannot believe they never…” and her voice trailed off. She told Joe, go in her bedroom, and get Massy’s photo. Joe got up and went into her bedroom, all he could see was photos of a dog. He stated, “I grabbed the 5x7” and returned back. Susan sobbed softly. She then held the frame close to her heart.
Then Susan phoned the Manufacturer to report the ramp issue, then she phoned the Wheelchair Company, which they had a technician come out right away (within the next hour). Her home was NOT wheelchair or disability friendly at all. She had to use extensions to turn the stove on. She struggled getting food out of the freezer that was way out of her reach with the extension grabber.
Joe arrived around 9:30 in the morning, knocked on the door. Susan was struggling trying to open the door, but she finally managed. From there, Joe decided to grab the coffee mugs that was way up on the top shelf, and brewed some coffee.
Susan confessed, she was shocked when her lawyer returned the next day to inform her, he had fired the Secretary. After he learned the details from her, he had someone to call in putting themselves in the same position just to get a “response” from his office. He then informed her, that he hired his mother to handle the office. Susan went on and on to state and report how sweet his mother was.
Joe became long time friends with Susan, eventually, they got married. Susan was so shocked to learn he was HIRED to SPY on her! Susan would often tell people “that’s the spy who married me”! Sadly, Susan passed away from complications, after 14 years of their marriage!
With tears streaming down her face, she said “He starved to death” with her voice trailing. She told him she thought she could trust a neighbor to take care of her dog, the verbal instructions were given. She knew their home was up for sale, she didn’t know that she would wind up in Hospital and Rehab for that long of a time. It turned out they did, and when they phoned the Hospital to relay the message that their home was sold and to have someone else to watch the dog, never reached her, apparently she was transported to a Rehab facility. Susan sobbed again, and said “Poor Massy, he starved to death!”
Susan added on, that she had bills to pay, especially the mortgage, and it was almost paid off when that bad accident happened. She added that the Bank was originally going to foreclose her property when she only had a balance of less than $2,000 left on the mortgage. Susan added she really appreciated the Hospital personnel for touching bases with the Mortgage Company.
My late friend was a PI (Private Investigator) who worked for a Major Insurance Company.
Joe realized, Susan is 100% genuine.
Susan was fine, but in tears. She even complained that her neighbors saw her, laughed at her and disregarded her totally. Joe then showed the video to the Officers, once her next door neighbors arrived home, they were confronted by the Officers, then per Joe, both continued to “laugh” about it! It ended up with both being under arrest. (The charges were abuse and neglect towards a medically needy victim. Originally was listed as a misdemeanor but the charges were upgraded to felony.)
